Talk, talk, talk

I gave a talk to UST students last week. It was about writing (of course, the only thing I know!)—magazine writing and novel writing (for No Boyfriend Since Birth).
Fun! A bit nerve-wracking for me, but fun. It wasn’t my first time to deliver a talk to students, about what I do, and though it’s hard (prepping takes time!), I always accept. People sometimes ask me why I do, and my answer is that I have to. I write in Cosmo because I want to help people improve their lives through what I’ve written. It’s just a plus that I enjoy writing so much. And so, I feel that it’s part of my job to deliver these talks and somehow inspire people to write as a way of expressing and fulfilling themselves, and at the same time, creating change.
Believe me, somewhere along the way, I’ve lost the confidence to speak in front of a large audience. Strange because my dad was a politician for 11 years in the province, and I used to speak in front of hundreds of people, nearly every week when we were campaigning.
And so, that’s another reason why I accept these speaking engagements—it’s a chance for me to practice and sort of ‘conquer my fear.’ As we in Cosmo are so fond of saying: Go lang nang go.
