New York Trip
November 30th, 2006 by C.Posted in Life at Cosmo |
It’s been weeks since I came home from New York and I am back bursting with fresh new ideas for Cosmo, (thanks to COSMIC 2006, the Cosmopolitan Editors’ International Conference held in NYC), a rosier perspective in life (thanks to 20-hour plane rides and days of solo wandering in a new city), and an updated phonebook (thanks to wonderful new friends, with whom I am determined to stay in touch with).
I was able to spend a few days more in New York—an extension made more wonderful by lots of old friends and my cousin, Carmela, with whom I stayed with in the Bronx. It’s been years since I’ve seen her; I remember how my family and I would always pass by their house in Barotac Viejo, my mom’s hometown, on our way to my Dad’s hometown in Carles, Iloilo. They would have piles of foreign magazines in the sala, which I would devour while waiting for the adults to finish their chika.
The night I met Carmela again in NYC, I knew we’d have a blast the minute I heard her laugh—and tasted the scrambled eggs she whipped up for us the next morning. I was never hungry in her house; among other yummy dishes, Carmela cooked the best sinigang na salmon! Our talks were always punctuated with great food, interesting stories, and lots of laughs; Carmela really is one of the kindest, fun, and smartest persons I’ve known. She took me to an amazing Broadway show, introduced me to her friends, brought me to see the New York Marathon (Go Lance!), and let me try real New York style pizza and cheesecake. Most of all, she really made me feel welcome.
On my last day in NYC, Carmela took me to Liberty Island where I saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time. As you can see, we went crazy with the pictures!
I have to say I fell in love with New York. But the trip was unforgettable because of the people I met and got to know the second time around. I can never thank my cousin enough for making the trip such an experience. I was truly touched by her generosity and sincerity, and I hope to return the favor someday.
Here’s a question I’d like you Cosmo chicks to ponder on: Who made YOUR day? :-) Let us know!
