Cosmic!

It’s been three weeks since I got back from what may have been the most important thing that’s happened to me at Cosmo this year. Red, Claire, and I were invited last October to COSMIC, the Cosmopolitan Editors International Conference in New York, a big convergence of the world’s Cosmo editors from a whopping 57 editions! It was…fantastic. We were billeted at the Hudson Hotel, a block away from the amazing Hearst Tower, new home to our family of magazines such as Good Housekeeping, Seventeen, O (The Oprah Magazine), Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, and Cosmo Girl!
Arriving in New York to meet all the editors and art directors of Cosmos from around the globe was too exciting that I couldn’t sleep. But on top of all that, I couldn’t get over the fact that I was in New York with Red and Claire! The conference went as such: breakfast at the Hearst Tower (cereals, fruit, juices, coffees, pastries, and lots of chatting with co-editors), presentations from editors, authors, Hearst team members, and guest speakers, lunch, more presentations, some free time, then a special dinner for each evening.
The highlights of my trip:
- I would have to say, the humongous welcome box of treats on my bed when I entered my hotel room, filled with goodies like skin products, makeup, books, GCs, cute underwear, Havaianas, shampoos, conditioners…it was nothing like I’d ever received before! I think Red, Claire, and I all had to give some stuff away to friends and relatives we visited after the conference lest we be charged with overweight luggage at the airport!
- Our international-themed Halloween party. We had to dress up for the 31st as something from our homeland. We thought, nye, okay, manananggal? White lady? Kapre? We didn’t want to have to explain! (Uh, ma’am a tiyanak is a…) In the end, I decided to go as Imelda Marcos, thanks to Myrza’s beautiful vintage terno which Kate Torralba reworked for her (thanks Myrza!). Parang no one really got it, and they all thought I was just in my native costume, which is okay anyway, since many were wearing their own. John Lanuza, Cosmo US art director, who is fabulously Pinoy, totally got who I was and had a good laugh. The night ended up being a great celebration of cultures and Cosmos, and I have to say, we had a great time! (Check out the January issue for lots and lots of photos in “What Made Our Month”)

- The very act of getting together with all the editors and listening to each other about how we work, what each other’s readers are like, the common and unique problems we face, the cool things we all had in common…It was quite surreal, and I kept looking at Claire, saying, “I can’t believe we’re here!”
Now that we’re back, I realized that we weren’t the only ones who had an end-of-year adventure: Kat went to Hawaii for a junket and is now soul-searching in Cambodia, Mariel flew to New York as well, then to Amsterdam and Rome for some beauty brand launches, and resident traveler Zo explored Macau for a story in Cosmo. More travel stories to follow, but all in all, it’s so good to be back home. Now I can’t wait to do some traveling—locally! I’m just digging up photos from a recent trip to Bacolod, then I’ll get back to blogging about this amazing new place I wish I had visited much sooner!

I know you represented Cosmo Phils really well! Congrats! I am proud of you!
