Videoke Queen

Love ko talaga mag-videoke. Put a Magic Mike in my hand and I turn into a tireless singing machine (albeit sometimes out of tune!). It allows me to indulge the frustrated singer in me. As a child, my favorite secret thing to do was to grab a flashlight and belt out my latest favorite song, simultaneously imagining I was starring in my own music video. Videoke brings that childhood fantasy to life, with matching audience pa! And it makes for great bonding sessions, whether with friends, officemates, even people you’ve just met. There’s something about a cheesy music video with lyrics running across a tv screen that magically bonds Pinoys together. Even those who can’t carry a tune feel the force of this magical gadget—kahit ayaw o di marunong kumanta, napapakanta!
Of course, the point of this activity is to get everyone to sing along with you. It’s not really fun if it’s just you singing. The trick is to choose songs that are irresistible. I’ve become semi-obsessed with compiling songs to sing. I listen to 96.3 (W Roooccckkk!), my ultimate resource of cheesy, pang-videoke tunes, ranging from high-pitched 80s glam rock songs, to senti ballads that everyone tags as baduy but secretly like. I even save song titles in my phone and Palm for easy reference.
So what are the songs that make it to my personal Billboard list? Here are but a few of my favorites:
1) I’ve Never Been to Me by Charlene
“Oh, I’ve been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
I’ve been to paradise but I’ve never been to me”
I actually cried the first time my friend sang this on videoke. Seeing the lyrics on screen made me realize just how sad the song was.
2) Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
Definitely a vocal chord killer but you can be sure that everyone in the room will shout along with you at “Turnaround bright eyes…Every now and then I fall apart!!!”
3) Saving All My Love by Whitney Houston
I actually can’t sing this but my friend Kissa does a pretty good job. I’ve made it a point to request this tune from her whenever we videoke.
4) I Finally Found Someone by Bryan Adams and Barbara Streisand
Ooooh my favorite duet piece! It’s so romantic, and the exchange is so witty. It’s bound to get everyone singing too.
5) Heaven by Bryan Adams
No videoke session is complete without this ballad.
6) Easy by The Commodores
Hit na hit sa mga lalaki!. This is one of the songs that guys inevitably choose.
7) I Can’t Tell You Why by The Eagles
Slow, mellow and easy to sing.
8) Love Will Keep Us Alive by The Eagles.
Ditto.
9) Be With You by Mr. Big
Perfect to sing with your barkada.
10) Ulan by Rivermaya
So melodic. Plus, kaya ko kantahin wehehe.
How about you? What are your favorite videoke tunes? Share them with me, I’m dying to add new songs to my list!

My friend, Camille, loves to sing Zombie by The Cranberries…she never fails to get a 100 everytime she sings it! =)
Top off mind, I love singing Runaway by The Corrs :) And of course, Laklak and Prinsesa are fave belt-it-out-’til-your-throat-hurts tunes :P
Hahaha I have a theory that sometimes, the louder you sing, the higher your score!
WEAK is never out of my list…

GROOVY KIND OF LOVE..love this song..
it’s mikey!
my fave videoke song: stop by the spice girls. we’ll sing AND DANCE to it! haha :) it kinda reminds us of childhood.
FRIEND OF MINE…for sure you’ll like it.you will never be out of tune with this!more power…
it’s Halik by Aegis, hands down! Performance level pa ;)
Really love to sing too! I usually start off with songs like How did you Know and Hanggang Ngayon by Kyla or Cruisin for a duet to warm up the vocals, and from there work your way up to harder songs or if you’re ready try to sing songs of Corrs. Nina and Mymp have lots of remake songs that you can also try and practice with, just remember to breathe! Occassionally i try regine songs for finale to really exercise your vocals, if you do this several times a week, for sure you’ll sound like a pro after a few months. Practice makes Perfect! Enjoy!
I WILL SURVIVE!! All time fave for me and my sisters. Makes me feel good everytime i sing this with matching breathtaking performance.:p hehe
FAME!
i’m gonna live forever
i’m gonna learn how to fly…
HIGH!
(note that the words in uppercase on one hand and those in lower case on the other are sung by different people… or groups… or whatever…)
i can relate to your childhood dream. My dad was a good singer kasi, maybe i got some of his talent. Anyway, my favorites are: 70s Dancing Queen, Ebony and Ivory, 80s For Your Eyes Only, Hopelessly Devoted to You. More recent ones are Buses and Trains by Bachelor Girl, Bring Me to Life, and Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang.

Fave karaoke song is “All this time” by Tiffany. I have this friend who keeps a theme when we sing, so if someone starts singing senti oldies, we all choose senti oldies and we’d end up cracking kasi minsan di niyo na alam kung saan napunta ung kantang un! hehe…
